Join Dr Jim Coyle for a full day of Teaching HSC Music Course 1, accredited by NESA.
Dr Jim Coyle has 25 years' experience teaching music in New South Wales from pre-school to university levels. He is much sought after as a leader of Professional Learning for in-service teachers. Coyle also takes high-profile masterclasses for young composers and is a popular pre-concert speaker for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

This five-hour course which addresses the main issues that cause problems for in-service teachers when teaching HSC Music course 1, namely student vocabulary and language concerned with music, teaching song writing skills, and helping to prepared student-lead experiences such as musicology viva-voces and performances.

1. Listening and Responding
2 hours and 20 minutes
In this session, a full analysis of HSC questions is presented. Strategies to answer questions relating to various elements of music (pitch, duration, dynamics and expressive techniques, texture, structure, tone colour) are proposed, tried and discussed.
This is often the most problematic area of teaching Music 1, so a variety of approaches to teaching are examined with a number of hands-on activities.

2. Composition
1 hour
This session will focus particularly on song composition – the genre of choice for most Music 1 composition electives. It will show, in an practical way, how to structure a song successfully and how to employ musical elements to produce a work of high quality.

3. Viva voce
50 minutes
This session will show how methodical preparation can help turn a student’s passion for something in music into and articulate and thoughtful presentation.

4. Performance
50 minutes
This session will focus on helping students choose repertoire, helping them improve their performance (when the teacher is not a specialist in their instrument) and on accurate assessment and constructive feedback.


Completing Teaching HSC Music Course 1 contributes 5 hrs of NESA registered PD addressing 1.2.2, 1.5.2, 2.1.2, 4.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
