Teaching HSC Music Course 2

Join Dr Jim Coyle for a full day of Teaching HSC Music Course 2, accredited by NESA.
Dr Jim Coyle has 25 years' experience teaching music in New South Wales from pre-school to university levels. He is much sought after as a leader of Professional Learning for in-service teachers. Coyle also takes high-profile masterclasses for young composers and is a popular pre-concert speaker for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

This five-hour course which addresses the main issues that cause problems for in-service teachers when teaching HSC Music course 2, namely composition, sight-singing, dictation, repertoire selection for the Mandatory Topic and the extended response aural and musicology examination question.

1. Composition
2 hours
This session focuses on the core composition element in Music course 2. This component, worth 15%, is a stumbling block for many students and some teachers.
In this session, common errors will be addressed and related issues discussed.
Much of the time will be taken up with an interactive creation of a model composition.

2. Repertoire, Score reading and extended response
2 hours
In this session, a variety of Australian pieces composed in the last 25 years will be examined and strategies for their successful inclusion in the extended response question will be discussed. A score sample booklet will be available to take away with details of where the whole score and recording may be purchased for classroom use (usually via the Australian Music Centre).

3. sight singing and dictation
1 hour
An interactive session exploring these skill requirements at HSC level and best practice teaching for them. A copy of Jim Coyle’s Sight Singing exercises will be given to each participant to keep.
This part of the session will take about 40 minutes. The remaining 20 minutes is reserved for questions and reflection.

Completing Teaching HSC Music Course 2 contributes 5hrs of NESA registered PD addressing 1.2.2, 2.1.2, 2.2.2, 3.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
