Whether you’re an up-and-coming musician, singer, rapper, producer, DJ, songwriter, or a budding music entrepreneur, it is important that you have the right skills for creating and developing business opportunities within the music industry. In this music industry skills course, you will learn the skills necessary to give you the edge to successfully manage a music brand in today’s ever-evolving national and international music industry. Areas that will be covered include:

The Music Industry and Small Business – understanding the music industry, and setting up a small music business.

Marketing Fundamentals – an introduction to marketing and consumer behaviour, and learning techniques for analysing the music ecosystem.

Product Branding and Communication – an introduction to branding, including learning strategies for building and communicating the brand.

Digital Business Strategies – an introduction to the digital business and e-commerce in the music industry. This includes identifying digital opportunities, and integrating and planning the digital strategy.

Publishing (Inc. Digital) and Royalty Collection – explores the role of the publisher, publishing rights, international publishing, royalties and royalty collection.

Fundraising and Grant Writing – an introduction to fundraising, including crowdsourcing, cross-promotion (inc. B-2-B) and grant applications.

Intellectual Property and IP Leverage – an introduction to the various types of intellectual property, and their relationship to the music industry. You will also learn how to protect, assign, exploit, and evaluate the value of IP for business purposes, and learn the value of developing strategies for building a portfolio of IP.

Contracts and Contract Law – an introduction to contracts in the music industry, including formation, performance, restraint of trade, contractual terms, misrepresentation, breach of contract, and remedies for breach of contract.
