12.45-2.15pm SCATTING: INTRO TO JAZZ VOCAL IMPROVISATION - Virna Sanzone

For singers who are interested in jazz improvisation but might not be sure how to begin, this workshop will cover some introductory approaches.

  • Personalising a song by modifying the melody and phrasing.
  • Developing listening skills and rhythmic / melodic ideas through improvisation games.
  • Techniques for hearing alternative pathways through the chord changes.
  • Scat singing.
  • Improvising over basic blues and jazz song forms.

Virna may have time at the end to work with 1 or 2 people in a mini masterclass infront of the group. If are interested, you should bring a lead sheet for a jazz standard in the key you want to sing it in.

12.45-2.15pm AFRICAN RHYTHM THROUGH BODY PERCUSSION - Tony Lewis

The overarching message of this workshop is that the challenges of African music, and the challenges of rhythmic complexity, are not challenges of physical technique, but are primarily challenges of the mind.

The workshop explores rhythmic structures drawn from the music of West Africa – principally from the Adowa tradition of the Ashanti people of central Ghana, and the Hatsiatsia repertoire of the Ewe people of south-eastern Ghana. The ideas explored include polyrhythm and generating complexity through the relationships between simple parts. We begin by exploring the rhythms physically through stepping, clapping and vocalising parts, and we can then extend the ideas to whichever instruments are available, to movement, or to any other ideas and skills that participants may bring to it. (Some physical coordination required but all in good fun and all in the mind!)

2.30-4pm HEALTHY PIANO PLAYING - Peter Walsh

This workshop gives an overview of the fundamentals that make up proficient and healthy piano technique. Including an examination on posture as well as finger, hand, and arm use in piano playing. Also discusses exercises and stretches away from the piano that will promote better playing and increased longevity.

REQUIREMENTS: Beginner level piano playing would definitely be recommended to get the most out of this workshop.

2.30-4pm ON WITH THE SHOW! - Rob McDougall

Musical Theatre actor and current Bachelor of Music Theatre teacher Rob McDougall will run this 90-minute session teaching two well known ensemble Music Theatre pieces from the classic Music Theatre repertoire. The session will cover harmony, vocal technique, and interpretation, and will be a fun 90-minute look at some well-known songs.

Rob will start with some vocal techniques and warm-ups and then you will delve into learning the songs that Rob has chosen for the session and have a good old sing along in harmony and with feeling!
