Join Dr. Narelle Yeo, Peter Cousins, Simon Kenway as they introduce you to the skills needed to be a great musical theatre performer.

During the session we will give you insights into the art of musical theatre including stagecraft and presence, vocal technique, characterization, ensemble work and more. You will have the chance to dance, act and sing in this hands on workshop giving you not just a glimpse but a taste of the fascinating, exciting, sometimes glamorous but always hard working world of music theatre.

The Workshop presenters are drawn from the Music Theatre industry as well as the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. This Taster will be run at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under the instruction of Dr Narelle Yeo, Peter Cousens, Simon Kenway and dance staff.

There will be some music to learn before the workshop you are also encouraged to bring sheet music for 16 bars of your favourite musical theatre solo. Bring comfortable dance gear to the workshop.

Narelle Yeo - Direction and Music Coaching

Narelle Yeo achieved considerable performing success in the USA, performing numerous professional roles in opera and musical theatre, ranging from CioCioSan in “Madama Butterfly” to the soprano in Terence McNally’s “Masterclass” for Pacific Repertory Theatre. On the concert stage, she soloed for the San Francisco Symphony and the Berkeley Symphony before returning to Australia. A “singing actor” and champion of new music, Narelle has premiered a number of new works in both the USA and Australia, including her recent portrayal of Catherine in the new Australian opera “The Long Ride Home” by Thomas Rimes. Narelle worked as a Director in the Opera Program at the San Francisco Conservatory.

Since her return to our shores, Narelle has directed opera and musical theatre for the Sydney Conservatorium and numerous other companies and schools in the USA and Australia. She has most recently premiered new works at the Moorambilla Festival and the Brisbane Festival.

Simon Kenway – Conductor

Simon Kenway is an established and highly respected orchestral and operatic conductor. He has held posts as Principal Chorus Master of Opera Australia, Musical Director for Opera in the Vineyards, Opera by George and Opera Under The Stars in Broome, and Conductor and Chief Vocal Coach for the Sydney Conservatorium Opera School. He now works as a freelance conductor, both internationally and in Australia and in 2015 was appointed Artistic Director of Pacific Opera.

Simon has conducted the Sydney, Tasmanian, West Australian, Canberra and Queensland Symphony Orchestras, Opera Australia, West Australian Opera, Opera Queensland, Australian Ballet, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Aldeburgh Productions in UK, the Australian Youth Orchestra and Beijing Symphony Orchestra. In 2017 for Opera Australia, Simon conducts The Marriage of Figaro on Regional Tour, and also concerts with Willoughby Symphony. Recent engagements include workshops and performances as Conductor and Music Director for Opera Australia’s Community Choirs project from 2012 - 2015.

Peter Cousens - Performer and Director

Peter Cousens is the Artistic Director of the Talent Development Project and in 2019 was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his services to the performing arts and to the community. A graduate of National Institute of Dramatic Art, he has performed in a vast number of musicals including playing the role of The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera on London's West End for 11 months as well as major roles in Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, The Fiddler on the Roof, Boojum, Bernstein’s Mass, Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Show Boat, the Mikado, Darlinghurst Nights, Strange Bedfellows, The Hatpin, Company, Aspects of Love, Floyd Collins in Concert.

Peter is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Creative and Performing Arts at Central Queensland. In 2018 and 2020 he directed The Mikado and Chess in Malaysia with CQU students and local Malaysian music students under the auspices of the Colombo Plan.
