Solve Second Verse Hell

Teacher to some of the great songwriters of our day, Pat Pattison is a professor at Berklee College of Music, where he teaches lyric writing and poetry. He’s in Austalia this year and sharing his expertise in Songwriting with us. Come to the workshop and be enthused and encouraged to write better songs.

Solve “Second Verse Hell” quickly and easily by learning to what to look for in a title and how to develop the flow of ideas BEFORE you waste time writing a lyric that dead-ends is some dark alley. Learn how to advance your ideas so the song gains rather than loses interest as it moves forward. Find out how to create a chorus or refrain that can be repeated effectively without having to change the words each time. This seminar will save you time and channel your energies efficiently, allowing you to write more songs and better songs.

In the final hour, Pat will workshop 2-3 people’s songs, live, using their lyrics and their real-time revisions to demonstrate universal principles in great songwriting. If you’d like your song to be considered for the live workshop, please email an mp3 and lyric to con.openacademy@sydney.edu.au (no lead sheet necessary) once you have signed up for the class. Please note that you’ll also be performing your song live in front of the group and will need to bring your own guitar, if invited to present your work. Piano can be provided.
