Roam Through the Romantic - The Enquiring Listener

This course has no current classes. Please the waiting list.

This engaging 90 minute workshop will explore the Music of the Romantic Period. We will look at the characteristic features of Romantic music and how it developed from the Classical period. Our focus will include an exploration of the music’s emotional intensity and how it is achieved through the use of musical concepts. We will also consider the development of the orchestra and the piano, and the importance of Nationalism and individualism in Romantic composition.

Using skills developed in “The Enquiring Listener” course, we will investigate the development of the orchestra and the new instruments added, as well as the development in the piano and its repertoire. We will utilise recordings and scores from works by Romantic masters such as Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Brahms and Beethoven, including symphonies, lieder, programme music and chamber music.

This course is suitable for anyone who has completed “The Enquiring Listener” course or who has some music theory background and an interest in the exploration and analysis of music. It is a stand alone course, but also follows on well from “Cruise Through the Classical Period”.
