STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESSFUL SCORE READING – THE ENQUIRING LISTENER

Have you ever wondered what a conductor’s music looks like? How does the music score represent the complex sound world that we hear? And how do musicians interpret and use the score in preparation for performance?
In this practical 90-minute workshop we will investigate common score layouts and the important terms and signs you will encounter. We will look at a variety of music scores and explore the ways they represent the music: graphic scores, instrumental scores, vocal / piano scores, chamber music scores and orchestral scores. We will also discuss strategies for following scores as you listen to recordings, and how this can add insight and meaning to your experience.
This course is suitable for all music lovers who wish to deepen their understanding of how music is represented in notation. An ability to read music is not essential, but is an advantage.
