Rising Stars Organ Scholarships

Rising Stars – Richard and Doreen Wilson Organ Scholarships

The Open Academy is very pleased to announce that from Term 1 2019 a number of scholarships will be available for students wishing to learn to play organ – ‘the King of Instruments’, as Mozart described it – through the Rising Stars at the Con program. These scholarships, made possible through the Richard and Doreen Wilson bequest, will cover 75% of normal tuition fees.

The Rising Stars at the Con is a dynamic performance-based music education program. It provides gifted school-age students with specialist tuition in a supportive environment that helps develop their musical and artistic skills.

Richard and Doreen Wilson Organ Scholarship requirements

Eligibility: Applications are invited from advanced pianists (at least Grade 6/7 piano) who will be in school Years 6 – 9 as well as any students already learning organ who will be in Years 7-11 in 2020. Successful applicants will need to have regular access to a suitable practice instrument (e.g. local church, school chapel); we can offer some basic assistance in identifying solutions, if required.

Tuition: Will take place (normally on Saturdays) in the Conservatorium’s dedicated Organ Studio, using a state-of-the-art Hauptwerk virtual organ. Students will also be given performance opportunities from time to time on the Verbrugghen Hall concert organ.

In addition, all Rising Stars at the Con students attend small weekly group lessons or seminars, where essential musical skills (knowledge of music theory and history, aural, sight singing and analysis) are nurtured and developed.

Applications: 2020 applications are closed.
