John Terry

Dr John Terry is a well-known Australian pianist, composer and educator. He holds a Doctorate in Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong, a Master of Music degree in Music Education and Composition from Adelaide University, and graduate performing qualifications from the Royal College of Music, Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music, and the Trinity College of Music.
As a pianist he is noted for his stylistically diverse improvisational skills; and he has established a successful reputation as a composer in the areas of instrumental music and music theatre for young people. As well, Dr Terry has spoken regularly at educational conferences both nationally and internationally: for example, for the International Society for Music Education.
He has been a full-time lecturer at several Australian tertiary institutions including the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide, University of Newcastle, and the James Cook University of North Queensland. In these capacities he taught in areas of Performance, Theoretical Studies, Composition and Music Education.
Dr Terry frequently acts as Educational Consultant for various organisations. In recent times he was appointed Editorial Consultant for the AMEB’s recently published and highly successful Piano for Leisure program. He has had extensive experience in teaching HSC Music and was for many years a senior teacher in the running of HSC programs at the Conservatorium High School.
