Duncan Spry

Duncan Spry, Australian Tubaist and founding member of New Chicago Brass, has performed and taught all over the world, including North America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. He has performed with such ensembles as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Brass, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Millar Brass, and the Sydney Sinfonia. In Asia, he has given chamber music recitals at the Shanghai Conservatory, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and Fudan University (China). Duncan was Principal Tubaist with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago for the 2012-2014 seasons. He has been a finalist for a number of orchestral positions, including the Lyric Opera of Chicago Principal Tuba position, and the Auckland Philharmonia (NZ). He is also a substitute player with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
From April-July 2014, he was acting Principal Tuba with the Auckland Philharmonia (New Zealand).
Duncan is currently teaching and freelancing in Sydney, Australia.
As a soloist, he has won many awards, including the International Tuba Euphonium Conferences' Young Artist Solo Competition in 2006, and the Sydney Conservatorium Concerto Competition in 2008. He has recorded several CD’s for artists on the Sony BMG label, music for Blizzard Games, the creators of World of Warcraft and Starcraft, and has also recorded music for Gonzo Studios, one of Japans leading anime producers. Many of his students have been accepted to Schools such as the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester (UK), and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Duncan has worked with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Riccardo Muti, Bernard Haitink, Carlos Miguel Prieto, David Robertson, Edwin Outwater and Richard Armstrong.
For the 2013-14 season, he was a fellow of the Citizen Musician Fellowship, through the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Collaborating closely with Yo-Yo Ma and 7 other fellows, he worked to sustain and expand the role of music in civic and cultural life by creating and enhancing communities through music. He holds degrees from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (BM) and DePaul University (MM). In his free time, Duncan can be found drinking espresso, cycling and cooking.
