This ensemble is for students who wish to play in an ensemble based on traditional Chinese instruments. The ensemble will explore both traditional and modern repertoire, building skills of listening and ensemble playing as well as knowledge of different repertoire styles.
The Ensemble will consist of both traditional and western instruments reflecting current practise in Chinese music ensembles. The ensemble will be drawn from the following instruments:
Erhu
Violin
Cello
Pipa
Ruan
Guzheng
Yangqin
Dizi
Keyboard
The program is open to school students between 12yrs and 18 yrs who have been playing their instrument for 2-3 years. The ensemble rehearses at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music on Thursday afternoons between 4:30pm and 6pm and the year’s program consists of four 8-week terms commencing in February. Students are required to provide their own instruments.
Entrance to the program is by audition and students who successfully pass the audition will be asked to join the program for a full year.
At the end of each second term an informal concert will be held for family and friends. Further performance collaborations with the Sydney Conservatorium Chinese Music Ensemble may also be possible.
The cost of the program will be $1,400 for the full year. Payment plans can be arranged on request.
AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Auditions to join the program will be conducted live. Students will be asked to prepare one short piece demonstrating their ability on the instrument. The pieces must be played unaccompanied. Students will also be sent a set piece to prepare and will be asked to sight-read a short excerpt during the audition.
The fee to participate in the audition is $15.00
