Dr Lu Liu 刘璐, FHEA is Senior Lecturer in Music and Acting Deputy Associate Dean (Education) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney, where she also serves as Discipline Lead for Intercultural Music and Director of the Chinese Music Ensemble. A performer‑researcher specialising in Chinese musical culture with expertise in the pipa, her work integrates ethnomusicology, creative practice and intercultural collaboration and pedagogy. Her publications appear with Cambridge University Press and Routledge, as well as in leading journals including Music Education Research, the Journal of the Society for Asian Humanities, and Asian Musicology.
Liu’s creative research includes the curation and performance of new intercultural compositions such as Dream Bridges, Lisboa Chime, Tang Suite and Hectic Jacaranda, alongside collaborations with organisations including the Victorian Opera, Wild Rice Theatre (Singapore), and The Song Company. She has played a central role in developing Chinese music studies through institution‑building, supervision, and international partnership work, and she currently chairs the 2026 CHIME International Conference. Her research and performance practice collectively explore how Chinese musical traditions are reimagined, mediated, and experienced in global and diasporic contexts.
