Julia Luo

Ousiyu (Julia) Luo began studying the zheng (Chinese 21-string zither) at the age of five and later became the first student to major in zheng within the Bachelor of Music (Historical Performance) program at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She studied under Dr. Lu Liu and renowned zheng performer Lei Dianyun, deepening both her artistry and cultural understanding of the instrument.
Following her graduation, Julia expanded her musical journey by studying the Japanese koto under Master Satsuki Odamura, cultivating a deeper appreciation for cross-cultural expression through traditional string instruments.
In 2024, Julia represented the Sydney Conservatorium at NSW Parliament House, performing In G by Zhou Yuqi for the Australian Prime Minister and state officials. In 2025, her guzheng ensemble was featured on Channel 9’s Today Show as part of the Lunar New Year celebrations. Julia has performed at major venues including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall, ABC, CCTV and SBS, and was awarded the Best Impact Award at the Sydney International Music Star Contest.
She currently serves as the guzheng tutor for the Chinese Music Ensemble elective course at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and also teaches in private school in Sydney, where she has established guzheng ensembles for students in high school. She is the founder of the Guyun Guzheng Arts Academy, where she mentors over 100 students and leads an active youth ensemble.
