Kate began cello studies at age 4 in London and her childhood mentors included the late Christopher Bunting, Emanuel Hurwitz, James Whitehead and John Kennedy. Kate was heavily involved in the London music scene from a young age and early ensemble experiences included the renowned Pro Corda chamber music organization. With Pro Corda she played in the Youth Proms at The Albert Hall when only 9 years of age.
In Australia her professional career began early with the SA Opera and the ABC Sinfonia leading to a busy career including engagements with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, principal cello with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, the English National Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, numerous musicals, chamber groups and recording sessions plus 14 years with the Australian Opera Orchestra.
Kate also developed her interest in historical performance practice, including returning to the UK to work with the Orchestra of the Golden Age and the Orchestra of London. Back in Australia Kate was in demand as a baroque cellist playing continuo for Handel operas such as Julius Caesar and Alcina with Opera Australia, principal cello and continuo with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, the Sydney Chamber Choir and festival appearances at the Melbourne Early Music Festival, Sydney, Adelaide, Barossa and Huntington Estate Festivals and as a member of the early music ensembles Musica da Camera, Concertato and Adelaide Baroque.
Around her busy performing schedule Kate has always pursued her passion for teaching and tutoring. Currently, she maintains the position of Head of Strings and Master of Chamber Music at Trinity Grammar School. Kate has a particular love for working with teenagers in a variety of ensembles and her students have had numerous successes in Eisteddfods and Musica Viva’s Strike a Chord competition, which has led to masterclasses with overseas artists such as Nicola Bendetti, the Doric Quartet and Alexander Sitkovetsky.
Kate is also extensively involved with the Sydney Youth Orchestra where she is both a tutor within the various orchestras and the conductor of the Richard Gill Chamber Orchestra.
