Rising Stars Audition - Woodwind

Instruments welcome to apply are: Flute/Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Cor Anglais, Saxophone.

Video applications for Rising Stars 2025 are now open.

Eligibility:
Applications are invited from students who have been playing their instrument for at least two years and are over the age of 10.

Audition Requirements: Round One: Video recording, Round Two: Live Audition

1. Applicants are required to present two contrasting pieces, showing a range of musical and technical skill. One study and one piece is recommended.
2. The recording should be no longer than 10 minutes total. No video edits are permitted, with all pieces performed consecutively in a continuous video (one after the other). The applicant should be visible, and hands clearly displayed throughout the video.

No piano accompaniment, scales, or general knowledge is required.

Videos are to be uploaded to YouTube as an unlisted video, with the student’s name and age in the title. The works being performed should be listed in the description box, including composer’s name. Please then email your url links to con.openacademy@sydney.edu.au. If the video is not received by the closing date, the applicant will not progress further and the fee will not be refunded.

Round Two: Live Audition
Students who are successful in the Video round will be invited to attend a live audition at the Sydney Conservatorium on Tuesday 5th November from 4pm. Sight reading will be required in the Live Audition.

Music Skills Diagnostic Assessment:
In addition to the instrumental audition, all successful applicants will be required to sit a Music Skills Diagnostic Assessment. Attendance at this assessment is compulsory for all successful applicants. The assessment is used to determine the appropriate level of Music Skills class for each student. The result of this assessment has no impact on whether or not the student is offered a place.

Virtual Sydney Conservatorium of Music

Woodwind Auditions will take place in 2 Rounds. Round 1 will be a video round, Round 2 will be a live audition at the Conservatorium of Music.

1. Video submissions close on Monday 21st October at 5pm. Late submissions will not be accepted.
2. Applicants are required to present two contrasting pieces, showing a range of musical and technical skill. One study and one piece is recommended. Please ensure that the video captures at least the upper body of the student, including finger combinations, embouchure, and breathing technique. Videos must be submitted via an unlisted video uploaded to Youtube. The video must be one continuous video with the student performing both pieces consecutively without any video cuts or editing. No accompaniment is permitted.
3. Students who pass the Video Round of auditions will be invited to participate in the Live Audition on Tuesday November 5th from 4pm.
5. Students who are successful in auditioning for the Rising Stars program are required to participate in the Music Skills Diagnostic Test. Dates and times will be confirmed at a later date.
