Music Composition

This course has no current classes. Please the waiting list.

The aim of the Music Composition course is to provide participants with the basic knowledge and compositional techniques required to work in the style that they wish to explore. Participants will work on a range of composition activities to generate ideas and subsequently shape them into a musical work. Each week students receive feedback and advice going forward from both the tutor and fellow peers.

Different topics will be discussed and explored including:
• Finding inspiration and using it to create music
• Different approaches to melody, harmony and rhythm
• Sketching musical ideas and developing them into a work
• Writing effectively for the piano

Classes are interactive with composition tasks during each lesson and time set aside for finalising compositions during the final weeks of the course

Over the eight weeks, you will discuss various composers and their styles and in the final week of the term there will a group masterclass with the tutor and a pianist to workshop and perform your final compositions.

A piano at home would allow you to try out your ideas but it's not essential.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT THIS COURSE

Not only the content, provided by the tutor was great, but it was even more inspiring to see the works students came up with.

This course exceeded my expectations.

The course gave an excellent broad overview of composition, but also gave really vital and in depth personal feedback and guidance. I loved this course!

Luis was extremely kind, knowledgeable, and professional. Was able to help with all the students regardless of style.

The ability to hear my composition played at the end of the course was so special. Thank you Open Con and Luis for offering such a supportive and collaborative environment.

Attending this course under Luis Saglie was a very special experience.
