Stuart Johnson

Queensland-born violist Stuart Johnson started his musical journey learning the violin. After completing a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University he discovered the allure and possibilities of the viola while studying at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts where he also taught in the Junior School. Stuart returned to Australia to join the Sydney Symphony Fellowship program and was offered a place at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne.
Stuart was awarded a position with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and taught viola at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music until relocating to Sydney in 2009 for his current role with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared as Guest Principal Viola with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and has performed in the section of the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Stuart is sought after as a viola teacher and is currently teaching at the Sydney Conservatorium – University of Sydney, Sydney Conservatorium High School, Sydney Conservatorium Rising Stars program, as well as in his private studio.
