Ron Philpott

Ron Philpott is well known as an instrumentalist, composer and jazz educator. He has been a professional musician for over forty years, and a tutor in the Jazz Studies program at the Sydney Conservatorium since 1979. Ron has given workshops in jazz and improvisation throughout South East Asia and worked locally in a range of music education programs for primary and secondary students.
Beginning in a traditional jazz band in 1959, he has played in all styles of jazz with many of Australia’s leading jazz musicians, locally and internationally. In the 1970’s he worked and arranged for the Daly/Wilson Big Band who recorded several of his compositions, including Today, City Sounds, Col’s Dilemma and On My Own.
He began playing bass with pianist Judy Bailey’s group and participated in several Asian and Australian tours. His performance experience is extremely broad, including bands such as The Last Straw and Kindred Spirits as well as the Channel 10 Orchestra.
He has shared the concert platform with several international jazz artists, including Stephane Grapelli, Herbie Mann, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Dewey Redman and Dave Brubeck. Ron appeared in the jazz films Southern Crossing (1980) and Beyond El Rocco (1989).
