Piano for Continuers – Level 1

Piano for Continuers – Level 1 is suitable for advanced students who may have recently completed Piano for Beginners Level 4 and would like to continue developing their skills in a group setting.

The course focuses on consolidating piano technique, improving musical understanding, and developing expressive performance skills. Students work with progressively more challenging repertoire and prepare a piece of their own choosing, finalised with the teacher in the first class.

Students should have emerging note‑reading skills, experience with basic technical exercises, and familiarity with playing in a range of keys and hand positions. The course progresses at a gently challenging pace and is best supported by around 30 minutes of daily practice.

The course covers:

·      Technical exercises to build coordination and confidence

·      Music theory explored through repertoire

·      Sight reading exercises to strengthen skills

·      Ensemble repertoire

·      Preparation of an individually selected piece

·      Performance workshops addressing confidence and performance skills

Please bring

·      Copies of 2–3 possible pieces for individual study

·      Display folder for handouts

·      Notepad

·      Pencil and eraser

Entry level

Completion of Piano for Beginners Level 4 or equivalent.
Students without this background should email con.openacademy@sydney.edu.au with details of their experience or AMEB results. A short audition video may be requested to help place you in the most appropriate level.
