The Contemporary Singer
This exciting and vibrant program offers a series of interactive classes covering key areas of singing and performance in the contemporary music genre. The course will focus on a variety of contemporary music styles including blues, soul, pop, funk, jazz and folk. Students will learn exercises and techniques to improve their singing and performance practices.
Entry level: Some basic singing experience is recommended but not essential. Suitable for singers up to intermediate level.
Students will explore:
- Vocal warm ups and exercises
- Vocal health and anatomy
- Techniques to gain greater fluidity and ease with singing
- Group harmony singing
- Individual song work – workshopping a song in front of the class in preparation for performance
- How to develop a song
- Performance techniques (including microphone technique)
- Rhythm work
- Lyric interpretation
- Breath work
- Nerve management
- Working with an accompanist
Students will experience a supportive and encouraging learning environment, aimed at enhancing their vocal ability and understanding. There will be opportunities for solo singing as well as group work and in the last class of term the students will give an informal, in-class concert for family and friends.
