This is an engaging and interactive class for singers with a passion for contemporary music of all styles. Students will learn basic singing skills and techniques designed to develop their voices and confidence, including exercises to improve their range, dynamic ability and performance skills.
Students will have the opportunity to sing individually with Jo in order to focus on the areas that are most important to each student’s individual development. These individual workshops will culminate with a performance at the end of the term after which students will receive direct feedback from Jo so that they can continue to develop and refine their performance skills.
The course also has a strong focus on developing performance skills such as stage presence, managing performance anxiety and mic technique.
Entry-level: Some basic singing experience is recommended but not essential. Suitable for singers up to intermediate level.
Students will explore
- Vocal warm and cool down
- Technical exercises to strengthen the voice, increase range and develop a consistent tone across the whole voice
- Basics and breathing and support
- Vocal anatomy – Understanding how your voice works
- Vocal Hygiene – How to look after and get the best out of your voice
- Performance techniques
- How to pick the right key for your song
- Phrasing and lyric interpretation
- Singing with confidence and overcoming performance anxiety
- How to work with an accompanist
This is a fun class that is designed to help singers explore their own voices and develop their singing, confidence and performance in a supportive and safe environment. It is a class that can be taken several times if desired.
NOTE
Students are expected to bring 3 songs to the first class (sheet music not required for week 1 but you will need to purchase the sheet music after confirming your chosen song. The average cost of this is $10). Jo will help each student pick the song which they will work on from those three options.

I continue to re-enrol because Jo Fabro is a great teacher and I like the process of getting up a new song to perform every term.
Jo Fabro is a great teacher. She creates a great class environment and succeeds in putting on a great concert every term - which is the output of her process.
