Jazz Ensembles - Audition

These classes are designed for students who wish to develop confident improvisation, aural and sight reading skills. They provide an ensemble-based environment for the development of personal jazz skills, along with an understanding of the dynamics at work in a small performance group. THIS IS A LIVE AUDITION - You will receive an email 1 week before the audition date to confirm your audition time. Auditions will be no longer than 15 minutes.

JAZZ ENSEMBLES COMMENCE ON THE FOLLOWING DATES:

  • Mon    13 October 6-8pm  - tutor Andrew Dickeson
  • Tues   14 October 6-8pm   - tutor Karl Laskowski
  • Wed    15 October 6-8pm   - tutor Mariela Mulder
  • Thurs 16 October 6-8pm  - tutor Michael Bartolomei

Once you have passed your audition you will be emailed a link to enrol in the course. The fee for the 8 week term is $585. If you enrol for an audition by 15 September (end of early bird offer) you will only pay the Early Bird rate of $514.80 for the term (12% discount), providing you are successful at audition. If you are a full time student or hold a current pension/healthcare card you will be eligible for a 15% discount - for this to apply, you will need to enter your ID number when you enrol in the course.

PLEASE NOTE:   We will only audition positions that are vacant. Current students have first option to re-enrol. If there are no spots available for your instrument, we will inform you and refund your audition fee.

Please let us know your instrument when enrolling in the audition. Any woodwind or brass instrument will be considered for the 'horn' positions.

Soul Ensemble -Audition

These classes are designed to introduce the student to a broad range of classic Soul and Rhythm ’n’ Blues music styles. Key features of this broad genre are revealed through the performance of historically important repertoire from the 1950s/60s/70s through to the present era. Vocalists gain experience singing both lead and harmony parts, while rhythm section players learn to create authentic grooves that will move an audience. Rising Stars Audition - Brass

Instruments welcome to apply are: Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Tuba, Euphonium. All students must enrol in an audition to be considered to join the Rising Stars Program. Auditions are held at the end of each year, with applications opening in September for auditions held in late October. There are no mid-year auditions for entry into the Rising Stars program. Rising Stars Audition - Brass

1. Video audition applications close on Monday 13th October, 5pm. No applications will be accepted after this date. Videos must be submitted as a link to an unlisted video uploaded to Youtube. The video must be one continuous video with the student performing both pieces consecutively without any video cuts or editing. No accompaniment is permitted.
2. Applicants who are successful in the video auditions will be notified by email.
3. Successful applicants will then be invited to participate in the live auditions taking place on Tuesday 4th November from 4pm. An individual audition timeslot will be allocated to you. If there is a specific time that you will not be available, please inform us immediately to aid with scheduling.
4. Students who are successful in auditioning for the Rising Stars program are required to participate in the Music Skills Diagnostic Test. Dates and times will be confirmed at a later date.

Impro Basics

This course is designed for musicians with no background in improvisation. You will need some basic level of understanding how to read music and chord charts. It provides students with an opportunity to learn elementary theoretical concepts, historical knowledge and basic skills in the art of jazz improvisation. This is a FACE TO FACE class in the Conservatorium building
Entry Level: Ability to read simple melody line and chord symbol charts.

PLACES ARE LIMITED TO:

2 pianos (2 spaces left for this term)
2 guitars  (2 space left for this term)
1 bass (1 space left for this term) 

We can also accept any number of horns or other instruments.

We will update the availability of places as enrolments are received.
